THIS IS WHY THE LAKERS ARE A CLASS ORGANIZATION
“The Lakers’ $91.4 million payroll is the highest in the NBA this season – $4 million more than the second-place Dallas Mavericks – and Kobe Bryant’s salary of more than $23 million is the second-highest of any player. It’s money well spent, as far as Lakers owner Jerry Buss is concerned. “Like all gamblers, we feel like we’re on a run,” Buss said Sunday afternoon during his annual question-and-answer session with Lakers beat reporters. “I think (winning) has to be (paramount),” Buss continued before the Lakers faced the Oklahoma City Thunder at Staples Center.
“If we could find a way to save some money and stay the level of competition we’re at, obviously, we’d try to do that. “In this particular case, we feel the dollars were well spent. Nobody likes this. I’d rather take the $30 (million) or $40 million and put it in my pocket. Just look at my (frayed) jeans. You think I don’t have a big payroll. If it’s necessary, we’re going to do it.” Then, turning toward his son, Jim, who serves as the Lakers’ executive vice president in charge of player personnel, he added: “We kind of stare at each other and gulp.”
Moreover, Jim Buss said he would not hesitate to add to the team’s payroll before next season if that’s what it takes to keep the Lakers ahead of the pack. “If we win again, I’ll look to raise the bar that much more,” Jim Buss said. “I’m not one who sits pat on a win. You kind of want to improve because that’s what all the other teams are doing, which is basically improving to beat you.”
